Dear students and parents/carers,
Thank you for your interest in Coombe Wood School (CWS).
I do hope that you will join us for our Open Evening on the 18th September 2024. However, if you are unable to visit, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the things I will be speaking about to our visitors.
As a parent, I am aware that choosing a secondary school is an extremely important decision and that you are quite rightly concerned that you have as much information as possible to ensure that you make the right choice for your child. You will find key information in this prospectus. However, there is more detailed information on all aspects of Coombe Wood School on our website. It is important to remember that not all schools are right for all students, so please consider carefully the strengths and ethos of each school to ensure you find the perfect match for you.
As the Headteacher, it is a pleasure to see both staff and students embracing our mission statement and core values, and I very much hope that through your tour of our state-of-the-art facilities and this pack, you will get a real sense of just how important positive relationships are to life at CWS. Outstanding student / staff relationships lie at the heart of everything we do, and it has been my great pleasure to see how these have flourished not only in CWS classrooms, but also assemblies, extra-curricular activities, House competitions, musical performances and Health Related Fitness sessions.
We are very proud of what our school offers for the development of the whole child, and the staff here thoroughly enjoy watching our students develop and grow into positive young adults who will no doubt thrive in 21st century Britain. Of course, health, happiness and positive relationships are only one step towards all round success, and you will also want to know about our curriculum and how we are setting about the task of preparing our students for GCSE, A level and beyond. For this reason, we have included our Year 7 Curriculum Booklet in the documentation to give you an overview of what learning looks like inside and outside the classroom during the first year of study at CWS.
The Evolve curriculum at Coombe Wood School is designed specifically with our Year 7 students at its heart, in order to provide them with the necessary skills to succeed in secondary education. The cross-curricular approach to learning provides our students with fun and engaging opportunities with an underlining focus on numeracy and literacy. Lessons are planned and carried out to support and encourage skills of resilience, perseverance and independence which are in line with our core values. The focus on teaching and learning here is relentless. Whether it be teachers planning exciting lessons, students engaging and working to their very best, parents / carers sending their children to school in stunning uniform after a good night's sleep or, indeed, the support staff at CWS making sure everything runs smoothly, it is fair to say that lots of people invest every day in making our classrooms special places of learning. Our job is to make sure they stay special, every lesson, every day. We leave nothing to chance - we believe that with the right support and encouragement, our students can and will achieve results as good as any students across the country. It points to excellence in teaching and learning and knowledge about what is needed in order to be successful in exams. Equally, all students will experience a range of other opportunities to enrich and enhance their experience at our school.
We do not just have happy students, we have students who are going places and who, as our mission statement says, are given every opportunity to discover and reach their true personal best. I very much hope you enjoy your visit to Coombe Wood School and, if your family values align with those of our school, we would, of course, very much welcome your application.
Ms N Williams, Headteacher - Coombe Wood School
